Trade Union Protest

Tags: , , , , ,

1224255613725_1SOCIALIST Party councillor Mick Barry this morning called on Cork trade unionists and the general public to show up in “massive numbers” for this Friday’s demonstration against Govvernment economic policy.

The demonstration assembles at 2.30pm at Connolly Hall and is one of eight protests being organised around the country by the trade union movement.

Cllr Barry said, “Friday should be just the start of a rolling campaign against threatened cuts in public sector jobs and pay, children’s allowance and the basic rate of social welfare. It is not acceptable that working people are being targeted for massive cutbacks when there is no wealth tax and we have a mere 250 people controlling 40 billion euro in personal wealth”.

He added that the trade union movement should not negotiate cuts and that Friday’s protests should “slam the door” on a social partnership process which offered workers only cutbacks and attacks on their standard of living.
