SPEAKING from the Cork count centre for the European Elections, Sinn Féin candidate Toiréasa Ferris thanked those involved in the counting process and wished the three successful candidates well after what was a protracted count.
She also referred to questions as to why she did not require a recount of votes.
“The question as to why I did not ask for a recount when I was eliminated from the contest for the last seat seems to have caused a little controversy. Of course as the count got closer the Sinn Féin team kept very close eye on how the vote was going. At all times we found the actions of the returning officer and his staff to be fair and diligent. We did not believe that a recount would have materially altered the end result. It seemed to us that to demand a recount merely because we had a right to do so would be a futile exercise. The people had spoken and I would like to wish all three MEPs elected well in their efforts to represent the people of this constituency”
