SENATOR Deirdre Clune welcomes the announcement of the patronage of 14 new secondary schools around the country by The Minister for Education and Skills, Ruairí Quinn today
“I am especially enthusiastic about the new secondary school which will be located in Cork City in the area of Carrigaline.
“The school will be operated by the County Cork VEC which has considerable experience in the area of educating young people in the Cork area.
“In order to be selected for patronage the Cork VEC had to prove that they meet the necessary criteria as well as the demands of parents in the area.
“Carrigaline has a growing population and this school will be a welcome addition to the expanding the community.
“The school will be a Gaelcholáiste providing teaching through the medium of Irish. This is a particularly positive development because there is also a Gaelscoil at primary level in the Carrigaline area.
“Diversity and choice are key factors for parents when deciding where to educate their children.
“This new school means that if parents wish to educate their children through Irish in Carrigaline then they can do so for the entirety of their schooling.
“There is a clear demand for a new secondary school in the area and I’m delighted that students in Carrigaline will have the opportunity to learn through Irish.
“I very much look forward to the secondary school opening in 2014.”
