O’Donovan calls on Minister to ensure pilots complete their course without extra cost

FIANNA Fáil Senator Denis O’Donovan, has responded to the announcement by Minister for Transport Leo Varadkar that he will finally meet trainee pilots who were left stranded in the US when their course collapsed.

Senator O’Donovan commented: “It is only right that Minister Varadkar will meet with the 80 Irish trainee pilots who were left stranded in Florida over this dispute between the Pilot Training College in Waterford and the Florida Institute of Technology.

“I have been pressing the Minister over the last two weeks to meet with the student pilots who are out of pocket to the tune of €85,000 on average after the collapse of their pilot training course.  I called for an adjournment of proceedings in the Seanad for an emergency debate on this but I am happy to withdraw this now that the Minister has finally agreed to meet representatives of the pilots.

“I would now call on the Minister and the Irish Aviation Authority, which endorsed the course, to ensure that the trainee pilots can complete their education without any extra cost.  We need to get these students back to complete their studies at the earliest opportunity.”
