A 10 million euro aid package has been made available to those households who were severely affected by the flash floods over two weeks ago. 800 thousand euro has already been spent in an effort to repair the devastating damage done.
“Many people have been unable to return to their homes and a lot of local businesses have not reopened. Sadly some of these homes and businesses are without insurance.
“The fund’s aim is to provide emergency aid to households who cannot afford to pay for their essential needs in the aftermath of the flooding in Cork.
“For example flood victims can apply for assistance to replace damaged carpets, flooring, furniture, household appliances and bedding. The fund is means tested and is only intended for homes not businesses.
“It is essential this means testing is done efficiently and quickly in order to help people in need as soon as possible.
“Up until now I think there was not enough being done to help the people in Cork who have had their lives turned upside down.
“I intend to watch the progress of this fund and if it is not administered properly then I intend to raise it with the department.
“Those affected can apply for the fund through the Department of Social protection offices.”
