THE Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr Dara Murphy will embark on a new journey to fill the city’s classrooms with music when he launches a new traditional Cork songs initiative in City Hall this Wednesday.
Accompanied by one of Cork’s most famous balladeers, Jimmy Crowley, the Lord Mayor will reveal details of the next stage in his initiative to reconnect the schoolchildren of Cork with their musical heritage.
The Lord Mayor earlier said that during his Lord Mayoral visits, he will be encouraging children to remember Cork’s traditional songs by presenting each primary school pupil with a card with the words of verses from two of Cork’s most famous anthems – The Banks of my own lovely Lee, and Beautiful City.

A LOCAL county councillor has committed that when Labour returns to Government, it will restore the aid for the school book scheme, abolished by the Government in the October budget, to all areas.
Mallow representative, Cllr Jerry Mullally described the abolition of the school book scheme to schools outside of the most disadvantaged area as “one of the nastiest of a series of education cuts that were made in the budget last October” and said that his party were eager not only to see the scheme reintroduced but, also to look at how else it can reduce the price of school books.

THE Clonakilty Cumann of Sinn Féin will host a public meeting tomorrow (Tuesday, September 1) to explain the party’s opposition to the Government’s National Asset Management Agency (NAMA).
The party’s Louth-based TD, Arthur Morgan, who is the Sinn Féin Dáil Spokesperson on Finance; Enterprise, Trade and Employment; Social and Community Affairs; Employment and Workers’ Rights will visit West Cork tomorrow evening where he, along with a number of other party members, will explain why Sinn Féin do not agree with the plans.

CORK Chamber yesterday officially launched its Yes to Lisbon campaign, telling businesses across the region that a yes vote to the referendum is vital to help fast-track the country’s recovery.
Speaking at the launch President Mr Ger O’Mahoney encouraged all employers and employees to show strong leadership and vote yes to re-inforce Ireland’s influence and position within Europe saying, “this will facilitate increased job creation, economic renewal and prosperity into the future.”

MICHEÁL Martin has hit back at anti-Lisbon Treaty group Coir, which has accused him of attempting to smear them in the run-up to the second Lisbon Treaty referendum.
Responding to Coir, Minister Martin said, “Yesterday evening the front-organisation Coir accused me of a smear in claiming that they are little more than Youth Defence hiding behind another name.
“This is ridiculous, as anyone can see from the basic facts. Coir operates out of the Youth Defence Headquarters and, as of last week, there was no mention whatsoever of Coir on the building.
