NEW laws further restricting the marketing of tobacco will help prevent more young people in Cork and throughout the country from taking up smoking, according to Cork TD and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Micheál Martin.
“With 97 Per cent of work premises now fully implementing smoking bans it is clear that the anti-smoking policies we introduced five-years ago are amongst the most successful in the world, however there is no room for complacency.

MINISTER for Foreign Affairs, Micheál Martin today launched an information programme about Ireland’s EU membership, whose centre piece is a public information website, www.eumatters.ie.
Speaking at the launch the Minister said, “Our ambition is that this website will become the place where clear and reliable information about EU issues and their relevance to Irish people can be found. It will seek to highlight the relevance of EU programmes, policies and initiatives to Irish people”.

Billy Kelleher
Minister for Trade and Commerce, Billy Kelleher held his first regional meeting in Cork today to discuss the experience of gaining access to bank credit at local and regional level with representatives of business, banks and the state sector.
“Access to bank credit for viable businesses is critical. If we are to ensure that our enterprise sector survives the current economic difficulties and positions itself to benefit from an international upturn,” he said.

THE Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr Dara Murphy is seeking a review of Bonfire Night practices in Cork city.
The Lord Mayor said, “Given the events of Bonfire Night on Tuesday 23rd June, 2009, with the incidents right across the city, I propose that the future of bonfires around city be discussed at the next meeting of the Recreation, Amenity and Culture Strategic Policy Committee and referred to the next meeting of the Recreation, Amenity and Culture Functional Committee.
