Local government expert believes public will vote on Friday

A CORK lecturer and local government expert has quashed speculation that people will not vote this Friday saying that he believes turnout may actually increase rather than decrease.
UCC lecturer, Aodh Quinlivan, said that while some critics and candidates have voiced concern that voters may be so disenchanted with government that they will not vote, that he believes this will not be the case .
He said that as it stands, while people believe that the public is not that interested in local elections, the voting turnout for such elections here is quite high and that even if a small percentage of people decided not to vote, the Irish turnout would still be higher than it is in other countries.

Local referenda can bring significant benefits

GREEN Party Senator and European Election candidate, Senator Dan Boyle, has welcomed the comments of the Minister for the Environment, John Gormley TD, that a major initiative in the soon to be published White Paper on Local Government and the legislation that will follow that, will be the introduction of local referenda to decide matters of important local interest.
The Minister made his comments while canvassing Carrigaline with Senator Boyle and local election candidate Cllr Dominick Donnelly this week.

Kenny denies plans for SF deal

FINE Gael leader, Deputy Enda Kenny has moved to quash reports that the party would consider entering into Government with Sinn Féin.
The move follows on from an article published in today’s Mail on Sunday newspaper where Fine Gael’s Director of Elections Frank Flannery said his party would consider entering Government with Sinn Fein if the situation arose.
However, Deputy Kenny has said that this article was based on Flannery’s personal opinion and did not represent the views of the party. He said his party has no intention of negotiating a partnership with Sinn Féin.

Crowley says EU Erasmus is key project for Cork youth

IRELAND South MEP, Brian Crowley has today praised the success of the EU Erasmus project to date and said that the programme is evidence of the way the European Union is enriching the lives of  young people in Cork through education.
Erasmus is the initiative whereby a student from one third level college can go and study for a period of up to one year in another EU country.
In the academic year 2007/2008, 209 Irish teachers and trainers took part on the Erasmus programme and 1,820 Irish students participated on the Erasmus programme itself.

O’ Brien welcomes drug crackdown

SINN Féin representative, Cllr Jonathon O’  Brien has welcomed the progress in Operation Reuben to date.
Fifteen people were arrested as part of the operation earlier this week, a move which gardaí say will seriously hamper drug dealing in the city.
“Operation Reuben is a very welcome development in the fight against drug dealing. For too long drug dealers in this City have been under the
impression that they are above the law. While the quantity of drugs seized is small the message it sends to the scum who deal drugs in our community is of a far greater importance.
