Colm Burke
FINE Gael MEP for Ireland South Colm Burke has called on the Irish Government to apply for EU funds to assist in the retraining and up-skilling of soon to be redundant workers from Dell, Banta – Donnelly, Amann and Waterford Crystal.
Mr Burke said that Commission officials had confirmed to him that Ireland has a strong case for funding under the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund.
“As of tomorrow, May 1, which happens to be International Workers’ Day, the rules governing the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund will change. This means that the €500 million available from the EU will be more easily accessible.
“Under the new rules, member states will be able to apply for financial support for businesses that lay off 500 or more workers, as opposed to the current threshold of 1,000”.
Mr Burke said that during the next two years, the level of EU-provided financial support will increase to 65 per cent, compared to the current 50 per cent. He added that he would vote in the European Parliament in Strasbourg next week in favour of amendments to make access to the funds easier.
“The EU will provide €2 to match every euro the Government puts forward, up until now it was euro for euro,” he concluded.
