FINE Gael Communications Spokesperson, Simon Coveney and Cork Labour senator Michael McCarthy have both warned that a new levy on broadcasters will cost jobs in local radio stations.
The levy is being discussed in the Dáil this evening with Deputy Coveney proposing the annulment of the new levy in order to require the new BAI to undertake a budget review and cost cutting process.
Deputy Coveney said, “Fine Gael strongly opposes Government attempts to hike up charges on broadcasters when many are struggling to survive.

BRIAN Cowen should stop churning out reports on innovation and the smart economy and start producing real jobs, Fine Gael Innovation Spokesperson Deirdre Clune TD said today.
Speaking before the launch of the Government Innovation Taskforce report to be published tomorrow, Deputy Clune said it’s time to turn all these ideas into reality.
“This report hasn’t been published and it already looks like a damp squib. From what we see in the Irish Times article, there is little or nothing new in this report and most of the proposals have been reheated on numerous occasions.

THE HSE South should move to reassure the people of Cork City and County that their X-rays have been reviewed by a consultant radiologist, in the wake of the controversy in Tallaght Hospital according to Fianna Fáil TD Michael McGrath.
Deputy McGrath said, “While there is nothing to suggest that the problems that arose in Tallaght have occurred in any other hospital, I believe it would be helpful for the HSE to confirm that all X-rays in Cork have been appropriately reviewed.
“The HSE should act swiftly on this issue to ensure that the general public can have confidence in our hospital system,” concluded Deputy McGrath.

SOCIALIST Party councillor Mick Barry this morning called on Transport Minister Noel Dempsey to accede to the demand of protesting taxi drivers and agree to meet the Irish Taxi Council.
Cllr Barry said that there should be a halt to the issuing of new taxi licenses and a genuinely independent review of the industry.
His comments came as taxi drivers Thomas Barton and Patrick Walsh prepare to go to the High Court this morning following their sit-in at the offices of the Taxi Regulator which ended last night.
