NEWLY elected councillor for the Macroom Electoral Area, Labour’s Martin Coughlan has said that he will be calling on the government to provide more funding to local authorities to allow them to carry out their work.
The Labour candidate described the funding granted to local authorities as “ridiculous” and said that the money given to Cork County Council under the grants for older people would not even cover what they spent on this last year.

LABOUR’S Martin Coughlan and Fianna Fáil’s Aindrias Moynihan have been elected to the Macroom Electoral Area of Cork County Council.
Both councillors reached the quota of 4,282.
The result is bound to be disappointing for Fianna Fáil’s Mark O’ Keeffe who failed to retain his seat.
The results conclude the Macroom count.

COUNT five for the Macroom Electoral area failed to bear any fruit for candidates in the constituency.
Again, no candidate reached the quota in this count and the votes of the candidate with the lowest number of votes are now being re-distributed.
Jerry O Sullivan is now out of the running .

THE race to secure the final two seats in the Macroom Electoral Area is heating up.
After count number four, Sinn Féin’s Des O’ Grady (the candidate with the lowest number of votes) has been eliminated from the race.
His 1,459 votes will now be re-distributed amongst the remaining four candidates.

FINE Gael’s Derry Canty has been elected to the Macroom Electoral Area of Cork County Council on the third count.
His surplus is now being divided amongst the remaining candidates.

NOT one candidate has been elected in the second count for the Macroom Electoral Area.
As nobody reached the quota, the candidate with the lowest number of votes, Green party’s Mark Collins, has been eliminated from the race and his votes are being re-distributed.

IN Parochial Hall, Fine Gael’s Michael Creed has been elected to the Macroom Electoral area of Cork County Council on the first count.
He received 4,655 votes in the first count, almost 400 over the quota of 4,282.
Fine Gael’s Derry Canty is poised to take the next seat in the four seater ward with 4,046 votes. He is followed by Fianna Fail’s Aindrias Moynihan with 3,642 votes and Labour’s Martin Coughlan with 2,897 votes.
The counting of Deputy Creed’s surplus is now underway.

THE results are in for the elections to Macroom Town Council.
Fine Gael’s Ted Lucey topped the poll taking the first seat.
The remaining eight seats have gone to Fine Gael’s Tommy Counihan, Labour’s Martin Coughlan, Labour’s Connie Foley, Fianna Fáil’s Eoin McCarthy, Fianna Fail’s Pat O’ Connell, Fine Gael’s Evelyn McSweeney, Fine Gael’s Breda Cullinane and Fianna Fáil’s Pat Melia.

RUMOURS suggest that Mark O’ Keeffe is at risk of losing his seat in the Macroom area.While counting is continuing at Parochial Hall, early indications suggest that the Ballincolig based councillor and son of Education Minister Batt O Keeffe will not be returning to County Hall next month.
